R+P Post 20: My Music Video Timeline

We decided to make a timeline as it would help us to establish the narrative structure of our music video. We decided we would structure the music video using a narrative cut between performance shots of our artists and band.

Timeline section 1
Timeline section 2
Timeline section 3

OUR NARRATIVE:

1. Casey falls asleep on the sof after having broken up with her boyfriend and gathered nostlgic items arund her to make her feel better.
2. She wakes up in a dream where she sees her brother in a Singing in the Rain landscape. They dance and have fun together.
3. She then finds herself in an arcade with her best friend Sgt. Pepper, where they play with a slot machine together.
4. She wakes up in Wonderland and finds that she is Alice. She sees an apple that says "EAT ME" and eats it.
5. The apple transports her into the world of Mortal Kombat where she must fight her ex-boyfriend: Scorpion. She defeats him3 but helps him up and leaves.
6. In her dream, she relives the moment she got home fter the break up, but this time all her friends are there to have fun and cheer her up.

PROS OF MAKING A TIMELINE:
  • It allowed us to solidify the exact timings of certain events in corrolation to the timing of the actual music. This allowed us to know when the verses and choruses are in the song, so that we could plan our narrative accordingly.
  • We also got an understanding of how the mood in each part of the song could be conveyed, while fitting in with the narrative structure. For example, the slower part of the song in the bridge will have slower paced cutting, and lighting to reflect the shift in mood to a more sombre part of the song.
  • We were able to find flaws in our original plans and fix them. For example, we realised our original idea of alice defeating Scorpion from Mortal Kombat was too long and looked to harsh, so we listened to that part of the music again and worked out that we could crosscut this section with clips of Alice picking up nostalgic objects, self referencing the beginning of the music video.

R+P Post 19: My Influences and vision for the project

OUR INFLUENCES

Sheppard - Geronimo

We took most of our influences form indie pop bands that use lots of pastel colours, quirky theme, and high-energy artists.  For example, we liked the aesthetic and editing choices of this whole-band shot of Sheppard in their music video for Geronimo, as it has fast paced editing and handheld camera movement to engage the audience's attention. We also took a lot of inspiration from Crazy For You by Best Coast, as the colour scheme is similar to the one we hope to achieve, and it uses face-on framing to mimic a "TV Music Show" feel, such as Top of the Pops. Using this technique would help us to connote the feeling of nostalgia we hope to achieve with our music video.

A clip from Singing in the Rain

We also took inspiration from pieces of old media, such as Singing in the Rain, Mortal Kombat, and Sgt. Pepper, as we will be using mis-en-scene to create intertextual references of these. These will help us to achieve the correct costumes and props for the actors, as well as to choreograph appropriate movements that will help the characters be more recognisable to the audience.

This is our steal-o-matic. It takes influence from different music videos and media texts.

R+P Post 18: Analysis of my track's lyrics and instrumentation

Jack's lyric sheet page 1.
Jack's lyric sheet page 2.
LYRICS AND IDEAS:

  • "Slot machine" - we will have a prop slot machine in an arcade, as a literal connotation of the lyrics.
  • "Don't wake me up I'm having  a sweet dream" and "do you remember" - The lead singer is reminiscing over her fondest memories and doesn't want it to end. We are going to portray this using a dream sequence that depicts her reliving close moments she shares with all the people closest to her in her life.
  • "Sitting under the old magic tree" - This reminded us of Alice in Wonderland sitting under a tree before she enters her dream world, so we thought it would be visually engaging for the lead singer to become Alice in this part of the video. It also amphasises the fact that she is in a dream that is very different from reality.
  • "Lucy in the sky smiling down" - We will make an explicit intertextual reference to the Beatles by having one of the characters dress as one of the beatles from the sgt pepper album cover. Our other references include Singing in the rain and a fight game sequence.

Our narrative will follow the lead singer falling asleep and entering a dream sequence where she is reliving old memories from her past, highlighting her relationship with her brother, her best friend, and her ex-boyfriend, finishing with her wakng up and realising that the present is not as bad as she thought it was, and that she needs to stop living in the past.

The style of this particular song uses a synth/keyboard with a muted affect, which sounds similar to retro game music (for example on Super Mario Land). Additionally, the guitar part in the opening of the song is slow and dream like, whihc is why we went for a retro-dream aesthetic for our video.

R+P Post 17: My Chosen Track

Black Cat Zoot.

Mutable Transformer Act album cover.
Our chosen track is Sweet Dream by Black Cat Zoot. They are a German indie pop band that try to incorporate classic rock music into their unique style of indie pop. Sweet Dream is on the album Mutable Transformer Act, which was released in Aril 2009, and was produced by Hazelwood Music Production, a production company that focuses on indie pop and rock. Additionally, the song was released as a free download on theor website, so using this song for our music video project wll not have copyright problems.

Hazelwood Music Production logo.
WHY WE CHOSE IT:
  • It is a unique take on the indie pop genre.
  • There are no copy right problems and it is less than 3 minutes long.
  • We have lots of ideas for a fun and visually engaging music video to do with this song, especially involving the nostalgia theme.
HOW IT WILL APPEAL TO OUR AUDIENCE:
  • It is an indie song that will appeal well to the niche audience of avid fans.
  • There is a female lead singer, so the audience (which is skewed towards girls) will find her aspirational and relatable. For example, 26% of our audience survey said they relate to artists that are the same gender as them.

R+P Post 16: My Band or Artist

Some influential bands on aesthetic.
Michael Jackson.
Our band is called The Acrylics, and is a British indie pop band consisting of four members: Casey and Hugh Tyler, Terrnece Kitchener, and Guy Chapman. They are a left-wing liberal band that are active in their beliefs about anti-discrimination and human rights. This has been shown by some of the world's most loved music artists such as Bob Dylan with his influential song lyrics against discrimination, David Bowie being openly bisexual in the press and against homophobia, and Michael Jackson with his persistent fight against racism (to name a few).
Additionally, our band's colour scheme and fashion will be bright pastels with fun and quirky clothes.

David Bowie.
Bob Dylan.

CASEY TYLER:

Casey is the lead singer of the band and is the sister of Hugh Tyler, the lead guitarist. She has just graduated from university and is left-wing and middle-class. Recently coming out as a lesbian, Casey is an advocate for LGBT rights and supports charities such as All Out. She is also a very quirky and playful character who likes to have fun in her music, adding her own touches to the music and videos the band make.

HUGH TYLER:

Hugh Tyler is the lead guitarist and Casey's brother. He dropped out of uni early to focus on his music career and shortly afterwards formed the bnd with his sister. He is really into the instrumental side to the music and lives to play his guitar live. He gets along well with Casey and the rest of the band, and he likes to mess around a bit and have fun with them, especially with Terrence, the keyboard player.

TERRENCE KITCHENER:

Terrence is the keyboard player who joined the band after graduating from university. He is Casey and Hugh's best friend and likes to be silly and mess around with them in and out of rehearsing. He olves the performance side of the music, and although he is just the keyboard player, he sees it like he's the lead and always has a fun time.

GUY CHAPMAN:

Guy Chapman is a close family friend of Hugh and Casey, and has known them since they were toddlers. He is a more quiet character but that doesn't stop him from making his mark and thrashing out the music on the drums. Like Hugh, he loves the instrumentation in the music, and although he hasn't got a big stage persona, his drumming is some of the best.

R+P Post 15: My Record Label

The Logo for Universal Music Group.
Our record label is a sister company of Harvest Records that is specifically made for producing indie pop music. It is called TNT Records as it focuses on explosive and fun pop music. Because it is a sister company to Harvest records, it is also a subsidiary to the Universal Music Group.

R+P Post 14: My Target Audience

Target audience - young people aged 12-25, skewed towards girls. We decided to carry out an audience research survey in order to be able to create the right reach and appeal for our target audience. We found out that over half of our respondents listen to indie pop often or sometimes, and generally more girls listened to indie pop than boys did. Additionally, most respondents say they appreciate artists who are politically/socially active, and identify with artists who share the same sexuality as them. This is why we have chosen to make our artist gay, and an active supporter of LGBT+ rights and issues. This will make her a good role model for LGBT+ youths to relate to, as well as proving to be socially and politically active, showing her as a grounded person so our target audience will trust this more authentic image.

Our target audience

Secondary audience - any fans of the indie pop genre. As over half of our survey respondents said they listen to indie pop, it is a large audience that we can reach via a 360 degree marketing campaign and appeal to all ages. The most popular reason for enjoying indie pop music in our survey was because it sets a mood, so we will try and convey the mood of the music through our music video, website, and album cover. Additionally, our audience survey showed that the audience appreciate when an artist shares the same political and social beliefs at them, so creating a gay artist who supports All Out, a pro LGBT+ charity, shows her social beliefs in an authentic way.

65% of our audience research sample said they listen to indie pop music to set a mood. Click photo to enlarge.

R+P Post 13: Influences and inspiration from art, fashion and culture

INFLUENCES FROM ART:

Our ideas were not incredibly influence by art, but there are definitely a lot of connections between our ideas and the pop art movement in terms of our aesthetic and colour scheme. A lot of pop art makes explicit intertextual references, such as Roy Lichtenstein's Look Mikey and Peter Blake's iconic Sgt. Pepper album cover for the Beatles, which we actually intend to reference ourselves.

Roy Lichtenstein - Look Mikey.
Peter Blake - Sgt. Pepper.

We also intend to use these sort of bright pastel colours, as well as sticking to primary colours as much as we can (like in Roy Lichtenstein's artworks).

FASHION:

The fashion that has influenced us is a mix of modern pastel fashion and model minimalist fashion. It mixes plain, simple clothes with pastel colours and quirky pieces.

A perfect example of this kind of fashion is the Keith Haring clothing line. Although it is not the exact look we are going for, it perfectly sums up our pop pastel yet simple aesthetic.

CULTURE:

The most influential part of culture has been the resurgence in bubblegum pop movement. This incorporates childhood innocence and naivety with undertones of sexuality and adult themes to give off a feeling of entering the adult world. This mostly appeals to young adults who are going through this, which is the target audience for indie pop. Bubble gum pop uses catchy music and fun music videos to appeal to the audience. For example, Sugar Sugar by the Archies and more recently, All About That Bass by Meghan Trainor. These both use pastel pop colours and childlike themes (for example the dolls house in All About That Bass and the man turning into a frog in Sugar Sugar) to represent this childhood naivety, while singing about adult themes. We are looking to use this type of contrast in our music video to appeal to and engage with our target audience.

The Archies - Sugar Sugar

Meghan Trainor - All About That Bass

R+P Post 12: Artists/bands that have influenced my ideas

The bands that influenced our ideas most of all were modern indie bands like Echosmith and Best Coast, and bands that are a bit quirky and colourful.
New Young Pony Club.

We liked New Young Pony Club's fashion as it is colourful and quirky, pairing lots of different styles together. Another reason they influenced our ideas is because they have a different sound to mainstream music and are effective in appealing to a niche audience using an edgy style that sets them apart from other artists.

Echosmith.
Another band that has influenced our ideas is Echosmith. Their interesting mix of smart and casual clothing has definitely influenced our ideas on clothing and costume for our band. Echosmith is also a band made up of siblings, which is a common thing among indie pop bands, so we are thinking of having some of our band members be siblings. This adds a different relationship between the band members which can allow us to portray our band as having a close connection with each other. Additionally, this is likely to be more relatable with our audience, as bigger fans are likely to know they are siblings, while some of our audience is likely to actually be in an amateur band with their sibling.

Best Coast's album Crazy For You.
Alvvays.
Both Best Coast and Alvvays have music similar to our song choice n terms of style, and they have also been very influential in deciding our overall band look. Best Coast's image is very influential, as they are all about their music, and not the money. For example, the lead singer, Bethany Cosentino, turned down a deal with a record label at the age of 15 because they wanted to turn her into a "pop-princess", which was not what she wanted. Part of the reason Best Coast is so popular with their audience is because they stay grounded to their own beliefs, which is something we can definitely use for our band's identity. Alvvays have helped us with our group's aesthetic, as they incorporate pastel colours (which are associated with indie pop) and wear smart/casual clothing. Additionally, the lead singer wears almost tom-boyish clothes paired with feminine skirts and hair to portray her confident identity.

R+P Post 11: Artist websites that inspired and influenced my ideas

THE MOST INFLUENTIAL WEBSITES:

Alvvays Official Website

The homepage for Alvvays's website.
My group and I were heavily influence by this websites because the aesthetic and branding is very strong, and it is well linked to the social media that will reach and appeal to the target audience.

The aesthetic - a creative, hand-drawn cartoon is the focal image on the homepage, with a hand-drawn background of a simple polka dot pattern. This really effectively connotes the fun, almost childish music of this band, and really appeals to their audience using pop and pastel colours.
Their target audience - young people aged 12+, generally skewed towards girls. A secondary, more niche audience of avid music and indie pop fans.

The social media links - when you scroll down from the main focal image, the main content comes up, and it consists of blog posts from the band's Tumblr blog. This is a social media outlet that reaches their niche audience well, and the posts consist of drawings (similar to the focal image on the website homepage),  tour dates, album promos, and other related posts such as references to music films like"Wee Are The Best", an indie film their target audience are likely to have seen.

Best Coast Official Website

The start page for Best Coast's website (this needs to be exited to access the homepage).
This was a very influential website for our group because it has a promotion of their most recent album on the homepage that the viewer has to exit before they can access the full website. This is a really quick and effective technique in forcing the audience to see the promotional offers first, making them more likely to spend their money on merchandise and music. In addition to this, the band's branding is kept synergistic with the rest of the website, as it uses the same background, colour scheme, and band logo.

Other band websites that had a promotional offer on the opening page:
Cvrches Official Website
A L P I N E Official Website (although this is not an additional page, the viewer just needs to scroll down).

Alt-J Official Website

AddAlt-J's website homepage.
A website that heavily influenced our knowledge of band websites was the one for Alt-J. This website showed us that a creative campaign that is entertaining can really engage a wide audience. For example, I have heard of At-J but I don't listen to their music, but I ended up spending half an hour on their website on the game trying to find all of the Easter eggs and references to their songs. This website effectively reaches their audience and general procrastinators, which includes almost everyone, so has a fantastic appeal to a wide range of people.

R+P Post 10: Album covers that have inspired and influenced my ideas

ALBUM COVER CONVENTIONS:
  •  Name of the band and album
  • The record label and logo
  • Year released
  • Barcode label
  • Square from factor
  • Song titles/track listing
  • Distributor
  • Name of the sound format
  • Website information
  • Record label and album title on spine
  • Extra info. on the sleeve/booklet.
  • Copy right symbol
  • Credits and thank yous on the back cover
  • Promo sticker
  • Lyrics sheet/lyrics on the back
  • A focal image
Album cover conventions are very important to include in an album cover because they inform the audience about the product. The actual design of the album cover is important because it is supposed to be eye catchy and grab the audience's attention among other albums.

Cream - Disraeli Gears.
This album was released in 1967 and reflects the "hippie" movement of the time with the chaotic graphics and pink, red, and yellow colour scheme. It seems drug-induced, which was a big part of hippie culture. The artist, Martin Sharp, used cut outs from Bob Whitaker's promo shots of the band, mixed with cut outs from various books. This artwork really represents the music, which Sharp calls a "warm, fluorescent sound". The album title is in the centre in small letters with the band name in large, colourful letters taking the focus. The focal image is hard to focus on in this album cover and is the image of the band members, which, among all of the cartoon design, connects the band to their music.

Adele - 21
This album cover was shown by Sian and Meera during lesson time, and I thought it was a perfect example of a simple but effective album cover. The focal image is a close up Adele, the singer. There is also simple white text stating her name followed by green text with the album name on it. The photo is in black and white so there is a clear sense of style, with the white and green writing standing out so the album and artist names are noticeable and memorable.

LCD Soundsystem - The Influences
Our group were thinking of creating an album colour using colour isolation, similar to this one (although possibly lighter to portray a sense of indie pop a bit more). This is a simple yet effective technique which just uses simply photography and Photoshop editing. This album cover is similar to the Adele 21, as it uses a focal image of the artist, with bold text of the album and artist name to make it stand out against other album covers.s

R+P Post 9: Music Videos that have inspired and influenced my ideas

Best Coast - When I'm With You

My group and I thought this music video was particularly entertaining, keeping our attention with a quirky/strange relationship between a young woman (the lead singer of Best Coast) and Ronald McDonald. The use of intertextuality was effective in grabbing our interests, as it allows the audience to connect it with their own lives, so that they can relate to the music better. Because our song mentions many nostalgic themes, we are going to use this technique in order to convey the meaning of the lyrics and in order to connote a feeling of nostalgia/reminiscence. We plan on creating this by using character from old media, such as one of the chaacters on the SGT. Pepper album, which is easily recognisable and allows the audience to become immediately immersed into the music video.

Best Coast - Crazy For You

While looking at Best Coast's When I'm With You, we came across this song. We were very influenced by this song for our music video's aesthetic. For example, we really liked this music video's self-awareness, and ironic portrayal of the music-making industry. It portrays the director as a cat, which can provide the audience with light humour to engage them with the video. The overall filming style gives off a very "TV music show" aesthetic, with face-on LS shots of the band, similar to the filming style of Top Of The Pops. We plan on incorporating this framing into our band shots in our music video to connote a nostalgic music feel in the same way this music video does.

Sia - You've Changed

We found this music video incredibly influential for ideas about props and costume. This music video is created in the style of a video game (one of the styles we hope to use in our own music video) using mis-en-scene and framing. The face-on framing puts the audience in the place of someone playing the game, so it easily immerses them into the music video so they will be entertained and listen to the music. The props in this video are obviously hand made to keep the fun and quirky aesthetic of the singer and the overall video, making it visually entertaining as well as immersive. We plan on making our own props out of cardboard like this in order to gain a fun and quirky aesthetic, while also engaging the audience.

R+P Post 8: Possible tracks for the single

The first thing we did as a group to find a suitable song was to make a long list of potential song choices. We each came up with lots of song choices and played them in a group meeting. We then each said what we thought of each song, and if it was appropriate for the task. We eventually came to this list:

SOME OF OUR FAVOURITES:

Some of our favourite songs included Time To Pretend by MGMT, The Suburbs by Arcade Fire, and Halo by Cage the Elephant.

Time to Pretend by MGMT was one of our favourites because it is a fun song with interesting instruments in in, which would let us experiment more with visuals and different effects to reflect the strange instruments (especially in the opening). The lyrics also reference teenage life, growing up, and nostalgia over the past, which was something we all thought would make for a great music video. However, this song is very famous, so there is a risk with plagiarism, and it is over 3 minutes long, which we were trying to avoid.

The Suburbs by Arcade Fire was one of our favourites because the lyrics reference growing up, for example the first line "in the suburbs I learnt to drive". This would have allowed us to create a really strong narrative-based music video. However, none of us found the song very interesting, as it is quite slow and repetitive, and we felt this very much limited the number of ideas we would have about the music video. Additionally, this song is over 3 minutes long, which would mean we would have to fade out the music so that our video s the required length. We really wanted to try and avoid this because we all want our finished product to look neat, completed, and realistic.

Halo by Cage the Elephant was one of our favourites because it has really nice guitar lines (for example the opening and the chorus) as well as beautiful vocals. Additionally, we thought the song had the feel of having a narrative and performance based music video. The song was also less than 3 minutes long, which was definitely something we wanted to have. We didn't choose this song, however, because we weren't very inspired by it and it didn't immediately spark ideas from us.

OUR SONG CHOICE

We have chosen the song Sweet Dream by Black Cat Zoot. We chose it because it is an interesting genre that will be fun to make a music video for (indie pop), and when we listened to the song, we all immediately started coming up with ideas for a music video. It has lyrics about reminiscing over the past, which is a theme we all thought would be interesting to pursue in a music video. It is also less than 3 minutes long, so we will be able to include the full song in the video. The lyrics reference lots of things from the past such as "Lucy in the sky", which will allow us to make lots of intertextual references that our audience can pick up on. Additionally, there are no inappropriate references, and the song is free due to the band being independant, so there is no copyright issue.

R+P Post 7: Record Labels of interest

We looked at many different record companies that produce music for independent artists and alternative bands, such as Father Daughter Records, 4AD, Jagjaguwar, and Harvest Records. We looked at all of these record labels, as they all produce indie music similar to our own song choice.

HARVEST RECORDS

We looked most closely at Harvest Records, as it has produced the music of some of our influential existing bands, such as Best Coast, Glass Animals, and other famous indie bands like The Libertines. Additionally, Harvest Records are a subsidiary of Capitol Music Group, which is a subsidiary of Universal Music Group, owned by Universal. This has shown me that like in film, music distributors are often horizontally and vertically integrated, and owned by a big conglomerate like Universal. However, Harvest Records mostly produces progressive rock music and similar alternative genres.

Our group have decided that our own record label for our band will be a sister company to Harvest Records, as it will focus on only distributing indie pop music music. This will suit our indie band and our song choice of interest.

R+P Post 6: Current trends in Popular Music

These are some of the BBC's predictions on music consumption in the near future:
  1. More music will be made for shorter attention spans.
This tells us that a more successful music video for our audience will be one that has a lot going on in it and keeps the audience's eyes moving and that can keep a modern audience's attention. This might mean we have lots of fast-paced editing sequences, direct address to the camera from the performer, and a narrative-based music video. This will appeal to the audience as it is likely to keep their attention, and not get boring.
  2. Music is about to get more political. This will allow us to truly reflect and almost show off an "authentic" artist image, using their political beliefs and opinions in the marketing campaign to gain a more relatable image.

  3. Release campaigns will become fluid experiments in creativity. This means that our website could have more creative/modern marketing techniques, such as an interactive marketing campaign involving social media, or even a campaign that takes advantage of new technologies like a simple 360o tour (or something similar).
  4. Authenticity will rise to the top.
This is mostly about artist image. It shows that a more authentic artist image is more likely to appeal to the audience. For example, using the artist's actual beliefs and values and showing the more realistic/relatable side of the artist is more likely to appeal and relate to the audience. This ties in with Dyer's artist theory, that states an artist's image is both real, and a construct of marketing. In order to make sure to appeal to the audience, marketing is needed to show off the best parts of an artist, but in order to keep authenticity, these need to be highlighting the actual beliefs, behaviour, and characteristics of the artist as a person.

R+P Post 5: The kind of video I would like to make

I would really like to make a creative music video, potentially involving a lot of props/costumes or interesting lighting and framing. I also would really like to create a narrative-based music video (potentially also containing performance elements), as I think it is a really interesting way to interpret a song.

I remember the first ever music video I watched (and remembered) was Thriller, by Michael Jackson. I remember viewing it for the first time not only as a song, but almost as a short film, that I could watch over and over again showing it to all my friends. I think this music video is a perfect example of the use of narrative to create an interesting and engaging video that illustrated the song, portrayed part of the artist's image, and engaged the audience by using visual aesthetics and mis en scene (for example the interesting costumes).

A song that uses lots of props and costumes that I really like is Best Coast's Crazy For You, as it mocks a music video shoot by using a cat as the director. This is almost absurdest and I think the aesthetic of the video is also really interesting, using lots of bright colours and fun props, as well as a mix of loose narrative mixed with music performance. For example, the main singer is performing the song, but it is as part of the narrative that she does so.

R+P Post 4: Audience groups of interest

Our target audience group of interest is 12-25 year olds, skewed more towards girls. Our secondary audiences include people outside this age range who are fans of the genre (indie pop), or older people who were fans of this types of music when they were younger (for example, if they were fans of The Smiths).

We carried out an audience research survey to find out what demographic of people listen to indie pop music, and found out that over half of the people who did the survey either did or sometimes listened to indie pop. Most of these results were from girls aged 12-14, with some male, and some older females. This showed us that because the genre is more skewed towards girls, an aspirational female lead would really gratify the audience's expectations.

Only half of our audience survey sample did not listen to indie pop music, meaning that 50% either did or sometimes listen to indie pop. This means we have a large audience, especially in comparison to other more niche genres.

R+P Post 3: Music genres that interest me

I enjoy a lot of different genres of music as a consumer, but my favourites are probably jazz and rock.

JAZZ:

Jazz originated in African American communities of New Orleans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and developed from roots in blues and ragtime. Some of my favourite jazz musicians include Benny Golson, JJ Johnson, Lee Morgan, Philly Joe Jones, Kenny Dorham, and Charles Mingus.

The jazz sound was very new at the time, and involves swung rhythms, rather than on-beat rhythms heard in other popular music genres. The sound of the instruments is often unchanged, and very raw, with occasional use of mutes on brass instruments to change the actual effect of the instrument. Additionally, the music has the "live" feel to it, so in a lot of recorded tracks, there is dialogue between band members of the sounds of the instrumentalists warming up.

A classic example of this would be Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers' Moanin', which begins with warming up and dialogue. (The first 10 minutes and 8 seconds for this song).

The look that most jazz musicians go for is the "live" look focused on the music itself, where in photos they are usually playing/holding their instrument and/or are placed in low-key/coloured lighting to produce the effect of a jazz club setting.
Jazz musicians on a Google search.
Additionally, famous jazz instrumentalists usually play instruments that take the melody, such as John Coltraine on the saxophone, and Kenny Dorham and Lee Morgan on the trumpet, and are known for their talent at their instruments. Musicians that do play instruments that do not take the melody are usually more known for their music writing, rather than their actual skill on the instrument.

Charles Mingus - Moanin'

Kenny Dorham - Afrodisia

I think that jazz music videos are really interesting to think about in terms of our project, as they are often extremely low budget and are incredibly performance based. For example, the music videos for The Girl From Ipanema (featuring Astrud Gilberto), and Ladybird (featuring Kenny Clarke and Lou Bennett) are both simple performance-based videos of what seems like a live performance of the song. Additionally, the cutting is very slow-paced and the shots are very focused on the singers. This shows me that a music video doesn't have to be fast-paced or narrative-based in order to appeal to the audience, as conforming to genre conventions is far more important, as it allows the video to convey the style and image of the artist.

The Girl From Ipanema

Ladybird

ROCK:

Rock music is a genre of pop music that originated as "rock and roll" in the US in the early 1950s, and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later. My favourite rock bands include Cage the Elephant, Savages, Parquet Courts, Cream, and The White Stripes.

The rock sound usually involves heavy electric guitar, often with a lot of feedback, drums, and bass. Also, the (usually male) singers tend to have rough, almost gravelly voices, rather than soft voices.

The look associated with rock artists is live music performers, and represents the artists as being into their music playing and live concert performances. The colours generally associated with them are usually dark and dangerous, and quite often they are black and white.

Google search of rock artists.
Jack White of The White Stripes has the image of being a true performer who is doing it for the love of live music, and he has performed both as a duo and as a solo artist in concerts and albums. The White Stripes are associated with white and red, both of which appear on most of their album covers. These bands are not only known by their target audiences, but a lot of their songs are well-know world wide, such as The White Stripes's Seven Nation Army.

The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army

Savages - Shut Up

In this music video by Savages, the focus is on live music performance and there is a lot of cutting on the beat of the music, as well as crazy stage lighting. This shows that the performance aspects of our music video can still be visually engaging without needing to cut away to narrative shots to try and engage the audience.
